Address normalization is a process used to verify and standardize location data. It ensures that each location has a complete and accurate address and can be precisely placed on a map. This improves data quality and ensures that locations are accepted by directories and displayed correctly to users searching nearby.
How Address Normalization Works
When a new location is created or an existing one is updated, the system:
Validates the provided address - checks that the street name, street number, postal code, and city are complete and correctly formatted.
Retrieves map coordinates (GeoCoordinates) - matches the address to a specific point on the map to place the location pin accurately.
Applies formatting corrections - adjusts the address format if needed, following international standards and directory requirements.
Trusted mapping sources are used to perform these checks. If an address cannot be matched automatically, the system prompts for manual pin placement on the map.
Why Normalization Is Important
Improved visibility: Correct and standardized addresses are more likely to be accepted and displayed by directories.
Consistency across platforms: Normalized addresses reduce mismatches between data shown on various platforms like maps and search engines.
Reduced errors or rejections: Publishers often validate addresses themselves. Providing normalized data minimizes the risk of submission errors or rejections.
What to Expect
The system may slightly reformat an address after it is saved (for example, changing “Main Street 10” to “10 Main Street”) to align with global standards.
When both an address and coordinates are provided, the system uses the coordinates but still formats the address text to standard conventions.
If the system cannot confidently place an address, it will request a manual pin placement on the map.
Best Practices
Always include street name and street number in the correct fields.
Add additional details such as building names or suite numbers in the “address extra” field.
Providing coordinates along with the address ensures precise pin placement and minimizes potential discrepancies.
