This article collects all frequently asked questions around Content Collections.
What are Content Collections?
A Content Collection is a set of Content Items that provide consumers with more information about a business. Collections are often standard across many locations, like a restaurant menu or a list of product offerings.
A single collection can be associated with multiple locations, making it easier to manage this information across many locations since updates only need to occur in one place instead of on each individual location.
Most importantly, the information in a Content Collection enhances directory listings and local profiles, often leading to higher rankings for a greater number of keywords.
This is the structure of Content Collections:
Content Item > Section of a Content Collection > Content Collection > Locations
- The basic element of a Content Collection is the Content Item. These items have 5 different types (MENU, SERVICES, PEOPLE, PRODUCTS and CUSTOM).
- e.g. "Pancakes" with the type MENU
- These Content Items will then be grouped in a Section.
- e.g. "Breakfast"
- One or multiple Sections then form one Content Collection. These Collections also have 5 different types (MENU, SERVICES, PEOPLE, PRODUCTS and CUSTOM).
- e.g. "Menu" with the type MENU
- These Content Collections will then be assigned to one or multiple locations.

DeleteWhat are Content Items?
A Content Item is a single object within a collection, such as a specific dish or drink on a menu or a product sold by a business. Since different item types require different data, there are multiple Content Item types available (MENU, PRODUCTS, PEOPLE, SERVICES and CUSTOM).

DeleteWhat is the purpose of the SECTIONS within Content Collections?
The purpose of adding sections is to group Content Items within one Collection. This is useful if you would like to create a MENU for example. Each section then can represent a specific section of your MENU - for example a breakfast, lunch, dinner and beverages section.
Where are Content Collections displayed?
Collection Type | Directories | Local Pages |
---|---|---|
Menu | Yes | Yes |
People | No | Yes |
Products | No | Yes |
Services | Yes | Yes |
Custom | No | Yes |
Can Content Collections be managed via API?

DeleteCan I assign a Content Item of a certain type to a Collection of a different type?
No, this is not possible. The idea is to manage collections based on the type of Content Items.
For example, the Content Collection PRODUCTS contains items of the type PRODUCTS and CUSTOM allows to manage basically all kinds of content.
MENU however is dedicated to publish dishes and drinks of restaurants. These can be set up as MENU items and then grouped in a MENU Content Collection that we send to GOOGLE (and some other directories).
DeleteCan I assign multiple Content Collections of the same type to one location?
No. Every location can only have one Content Collection of each type assigned to them. For example, you can only assign one Collection of the type MENU to a location, meaning that a location cannot have two MENUS.
DeleteCan I assign the same Content Item to multiple sections within the same Content Collection?
No. It is not possible to add the same Content Item to several sections within the same Content Collection.
If you wish to add a certain Content Item to multiple sections within one Content Collection, you can create a new Content Item for each section that you'd like the Content Item to be added to.
DeleteCan I assign a Content Item directly to a location?
No, this is not the intended behavior neither of Content Items nor of Content Collections. The idea is to create Content Items, add them to the Collections and then assign locations to the Collection. This way the Collection becomes the center piece and can be adjusted to manage content of many locations.

Can I manage my Content Collections in bulk via the import file?
Yes. The location import/export functionality in our platform supports the management of Content Collections. With the import file you can create content items and Content Collections or manage existing ones:
- First, Content Items are created in the respective tabs (MENU, PRODUCTS, SERVICES, PEOPLE, CUSTOM).
- These Content Items will then be assigned to Content Collections in the tab "Collections".
- The Collections can then be assigned to locations by using the collection identifiers and adding them to the locations in the "Locations" tab in the respective column (eg. "productsCollectionIdentifier").
What are structured SERVICES?
The Content Item type SERVICES is a datafield which we can push to Google Business Profiles. In order for Google to digest it, the SERVICE item has to be formatted in a specific way. This format is referred to as "structured".
A structured SERVICE is based on a predefined set of SERVICES provided by Google. Each location category in each country is linked to certain SERVICES.
When creating a SERVICE item in our platform, you can define your business category and the country first, and our system will offer you all available structured SERVICES from a drop-down menu.
Are structured SERVICES supported for my location's business category?
When creating a new SERVICE item, you can select your business category and the country and then open the drop down in "Name". The listed SERVICES are supported by Google and should be selected.
Are "freeform" SERVICE items sent to Google?
Our system will push all SERVICE items to Google, regardless of their format. However, only structured SERVICES are guaranteed to be accepted by Google.
Google's list of services does not cover everything a business potentially offers, so users can create their own services. These services will be sent to all directories and appear on local pages; but, Google does not accept freeform services for all business categories, so these may not appear on the business's Google profile.
DeleteWhat happened to EVENTS?
EVENTS is no more a dedicated Content Item type. Instead, you can use the type CUSTOM and use the description to publish the date and time.
DeleteWho can benefit from Content Collections?
Technically any user level is able to use the feature, as long as the user is enabled for Content Collections.
DeleteCan I access all Content Collections?
No. You can only access the Content Collections that you created yourself or which have been assigned to locations that you have access to.
DeleteI cannot delete or update a specific Content Collection, why?
If a collection is labeled "View Only," then the user cannot update or delete the collection. Collections may be in "View Only" for two reasons:
- The user does not have permission to create, edit, or delete collections.
- The collection is associated with some locations the user does not manage.
Admins have the ability to change and delete all Content Collections.
DeleteWhat are the requirements for images in Content Items?
