How does Google determine local ranking?

Last updated on November 1st, 2023

Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. These factors are combined to help find the best match for a search.

For example, Google algorithms might decide that a business that's further away from a person's location is more likely to have what they're looking for than a business that's closer, and therefore rank it higher in local results. The three most important factors will be explained in further details:

Relevance

Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Therefore, it is important to add complete and detailed business information to the listing that can help Google better understand the business and match the listing to relevant searches.

Distance

How far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn't specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about the user's location. This is something an owner of a business can't directly influence.

Prominence

Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.

Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (such as: links, articles, and directories). Google review count and score are factored into local search ranking. That means more reviews and positive ratings will probably improve a business's local ranking. This makes customer feedback management highly important. The position in web results is also a factor, so SEO best practices also apply to local search optimization.

There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.

Will working with your platform influence the ranking of my website?

Working with our platform improves local search results (showing the listing in the Local Pack‍ and Google Maps), by allowing you to add important information to your listings in order to make it relevant for the user.

The consistency of NAP (Name, Address and Phone Number) data indicates Google that the business exists and increases the familiarity. Presence can get increased by interaction with the users by responding to client reviews.

In combination with the distance of the user searching, this helps the listing to show up higher in the local search results. However, this is a separate ecosystem and we can’t prove the direct influence on the organic ranking of your website.
